College students welcome to the library

February 6, Diane Knippshild brought 15 basic education program students to the public library for a tour at 1 pm. 10 students from the pre-12 program, and 6 biology students. The tour guide Manisha introduced the students to different areas of the library.

Diane suggested we could send someone to the college lab to conduct a information literacy session for online databases, how to find things in the library, how to use the library catalog, how to manage bookmarks, create blogs and conduct effective online searches. Diane suggested we could do a poster for college students.

Report for my supervisors: Library cards were issued or renewed, PIN activated for online use of library services, students checked out fiction and nonfiction books, students created and added posts on this blog, aboriginal storytelling week and library programs information was given to all the students and the teacher.

Prior to the tour; a information needs assessment of the students was done. The topics requested by the instructor included --- writing poetry, martial arts, wine making recipes, growing grapes, sports, learning to speak Spanish, Nazis, justice system, and magnetism, and wood working. Tags for these topics were placed on the shelves across various aisles in the library. A demonstration for the online database - Automotive Repair and Maintenance was conducted. Students were shown that the databases could be accessed from any computer that had internet access. A quick information literacy session about the library catalog and search engine was done using 'root cellars' subject term. At 2:30 pm the students loaded with a caravan of checked out books went back to the college. One of the students, Chris said, "Library is a information agency.'
